My Lord,

In continuation of r. .T. Southorn's

secret despatch of the 11th of October, 1929, I have the honour to inform Your Lordship that since then the movement, which began with the revolt of Cheung Fat-fui has spread until it has involved almost the whole of China. The situation is in many respects obscure and complicated in the extreme; but it is possible to isolate some of the chief principles and personalities and to use these to indicate some sort of path through the maze of treachery and intrigue. Before doing so, however, it is advisable to sketch very briefly the events of the past two months.

2. By the 11th of October, 1929, the Tanking Government had succeeded in checking the spread of the rebellion against its authority in Kwangsi province. The army of Cheung Tat-fui was still intact; but it was for the time being held up
